Remembering the Dreese–Slap Family, Stolpersteine Amsterdam
This video shares the moving Stolpersteine story of the Dreese–Slap family, direct relatives and father of our guide Gaby. Their story reflects the deep roots of Jewish life in Amsterdam and the devastating impact of the Holocaust. Aby Dreese, a talented musician and textile representative, was arrested at home and later murdered in Auschwitz. His wife Esther Dreese-Slap and their young son Lukas, Gaby’s father, survived by going into hiding in Friesland, supported by the Dutch resistance. This family story is also connected to Esther’s parents, Ephraim Slap and Vrouwtje Slap–van de Kar. Both perished in Bergen-Belsen; their suffering and courage remain central in the family’s memory. The Stolpersteine honour these lives, ensuring that their names continue to be seen, remembered, and respected as part of Amsterdam’s Jewish heritage.
